Description

Picture of the plaque above the entrance of a Womens hospice in Haarlem in the Netherlands with this text engraved.

Incarnatie

"oMdat wII oVt ende behoeftiCh sChenen VerLaten geeft hVgo van assendeLft hier gestiCht t'onser baten"

Anno Barbera vrouwen gasthuis 1624.

1624 was de date that this plaque was installed above the doorway , but what was the real date this Hospice for women was founded ??

its a Chronogram hidden in the text

"oMdat wII oVt ende behoeftiCh sChenen VerLaten geeft hVgo van assendeLft hier gestiCht t'onser baten""

, think in Roman nummerials !

The sentence itself is a rhyme , and means in English free translation this :

"Because in the end we appeared often destituted and deserted, Hugo van Assendelft founded this Hospice for our benefit"

hope you find the answer for the real year this womens hospice was founded.

I saw this picture and just had to look at it. When I saw the chronogram I had to try it. I got 1417 and that's taking in all the capital letters. Since the deed was signed in 1418, I think it might be the closest we get.  It's also possible the closest early papers, or other dated finds, found about the hospice is from 1435. Old papers and parchments tend to disappear over time, ehich I've found out the hard way during my genealogy research. Stuff like this is fun and frustrating at the same time...

I feel like I'm babbling now, so I shall stop XD
